Written after I returned from a 10 day meditation retreat on 04/06/03.
If I cannot love myself because of the past,
How can I hope for others to heal themselves at
last?
If I cannot forgive my parents for their controlling ways,
How can I pray for peace in these troubled days?
If I can't tell the truth to others who I meet,
How can I expect corruption to end when politicians greet?
If I have no time or compassion to share with others,
How can I imagine that Israel and Palestine may one day become brothers?
How can I hope the terminally ill will find their inner-rest,
If I feel self pity when I'm not feeling my best?
How can I wish for poverty-stricken countries to thrive,
If I cannot thank God for being alive?
How can I dream another's pain away,
If I cannot to face my own day?
One might say 'It's quite simple you see,
There's just no hope for you or for me,
We're just poor slobs trying to carry along,
The whole human race has all gone wrong,
I stick to my comforts as much as I can,
So I don't have to face the almighty plan.'
'It's a tale of destruction, misery and greed,
No-one can have everything that they need,
Just the human condition in every nation,
A story of death and isolation.'
I understand that this feeling of despair,
Helps create this very nightmare,
I know that the universal solution,
Has been hidden and burried amongst the pollution,
That collects in our oceans, forests and mind,
The dillusion of seperateness that makes us so blind,
We cling to egos that create craving and fear,
It's when we let go that freedom is near,
We hold on to our pain, memories and confusion,
As if joy and contentment we just an illusion,
Not understanding that every being on the face of the earth,
Has it's potential and infinate worth,
We come from a source of divine wisdom and love,
And will return so again with help from above,
But deities exist not only in the skies,
You can see their faces in everyones eyes,
If you look hard enough with a heart that is open,
You realise that every barrier can be broken,
For this is the spirit's most natrual state,
And returning to this is part of our fate.

Such important questions here Anna, and some very thoughtful insight leads us to the answer. We must let go of our demons and open our hearts. There is hope and you have shown it to us in this contemplative write.

Life is a series of thin lines, ifs, and how can Is. Arthur Miller described life in Death of a Salesman, as a peeling away of an orange skin. Lennon in paraphrasing Browning described it as 'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plan.' The bible urges us to love our neighbour as ourselves. In other words, before we can be of use to anybody, we have to come to terms with ourselves.
Life can be so reflexive, so reflective, yet this introspection and retrospection provides us with the lessons to move forward - ideally.
This is a compelling piece in the manner of a Harrison song that contains the repeated, 'It easier to...' refrain.
