Foreword

Love and the Loser

Our society is changing, yet not obvious at first. But on a deeper level there is an injustice that’s crept under the back door like a fungus that is only attracted to healthy relationships. Infecting them as a virus and leaving emotional carnage in its wake.

I don’t know why our culture suffers so, nor if it’s isolated, yet the nemesis looms.

Has our material mindedness brought us to a point where objects outshine people and creation itself?  Perhaps the media has taught us that it’s normal and acceptable behavior, or maybe our new credo is not one for all but rather all for oneself as our seething selfishness erodes moral boundaries; one can only surmise.

Not two years ago I watched as the last of the married couples I had known crashed and burned. I can’t say for sure why this one affected me more than all the others, I had been involved in the others just the same, yet this one caused me to break down. I think at that time I was beginning to see the big picture as I cried out in rage, “Why doesn’t anyone stay together anymore!” I tried everything to keep them together, not wanting to see those children I had grown to love suffer as I did as a boy when worlds collide.  I felt helpless watching the dynamics of bitterness unfold as their relationship mutated into a vile creature of malice and revenge, inadvertently getting caught in the middle.

This poem capture’s the essence of their struggle just it has for many here at the nest, where heretofore this silent witness shall stroke the python as love’s lament spurns a rainbow with each tear. But before I begin let’s ask ourselves why we feed our ego’s with intellectualisms and frivolous pursuits, selling out on the only thing that makes sense in this mixed up world; our hearts?

Wilted Gardens

And do you Mr. Love struck loser

Take this woman to be your…

To have and to hold until

The Earth no longer orbits the sun,

Until her breasts scrape the path

Well worn from sacrifice and servitude?

Young lovers sequestered in earnest,

Such promise, such passion, so precious,

He was handsome, gentle and kind,

She was vivacious and oozing her prime.

I was the best man!

I give unto thee symbols of longevity

Wine to ensure your happiness,

Olive oil to garnish and lubricate

Seeds, sew your credible garden proliferates

Turn the page

Love made manifest, a child was born,

Then their were two, life’s all shiny & new!

The golden children the focal point,

Lives redefined their future now primed,

The world at their finger tips.

Turn the page

Somewhere in the midst

Life’s inadvertent twist,

While in a tizzy to provide

That tender selflessness fell aside,

A fecundity for fungus.

Turn the page

Arguments instead of discussions,

Sleeping quarters, collective borders,

My house, my money, my life!

What was plural became singular.

Tears enshrouding young cheeks,

Listening beyond contentions corridors.

The fungus silently crept.

Turn the page

A vehemence rages out of control

Leaching idealisms, sacking loves soul.

Now the ax falls; infidelity reigns.

Words become missiles intended to maim,

Bloody efflorescence: sharks encircle,

Legal predators feeding on the flesh of misery,

Motions are cast; judicial injustice!

The fungus blooms consuming hopes remnants.

Turn the page

The Aftermath:

I returned to help sweep

Razor sharp shards now in a heap,

Yesterdays mirrors once housing reflections,

Aspirations and dreams; two lovers collection.

A walking corpse of a man,

With hollowed out eyes and trembling hands.

The power of forgiveness I should reiterate,

But then I realize it’s much too late.

Dare I attempt to remove one of a

Thousand poison daggers supporting him?

I dare not.

I shall steady his trembling hand in mine,

Let my ears become spittoons for heart phlegm

For born suffrage knows no solace.

Shocking and familiar in its reality. Love and hate are both so complex--multi-faceted, like raw crystals that become polished with the years and sometimes reflect off one another resulting in a very odd light. Thank you for sharing this.

... Just left such a long review and comment on this, HJ, the page went down and I lost it!! :(( In short, this is so raw and intensely executed with eye-popping and uniquely crafted imagery that my heart is pounding. The emotion and tone are palpably real. I feel this, and it is sadly a subject from which few of us are immune - whether still married or not. All couples have to learn adaptation and metamorphosis and it is a very sad state of today's fast-moving and ever-changing world that we perceive the external pressures to be too overwhelming to be able to cope with the internal ones at the same time. I am sorry that you have had such a huge amount of personal experience of this from both sides of the fence. A most acute and powerful write. TY Kate xx

Yes, it is a sad state. I think people need to keep their true interests alive. If you want your bouquet of flowers to last very long after the wedding day, you'll be loving a wilted bouquet pretty soon. It has to be friendship too, not just sex.

Wilted Gardens, such a profound piece. I am a victim of divorce, both from my parents and then my marriage. I tried to work it out for far too long, see, if you leave when your gut tells you, then the bitterness and infidelity does not play a factor. It's when you try to stay in a bad situation, that's when all the ugliness arises. I am grateful to you for treading carefully on such a painful subject. We should chat sometime I believe we have a lot to say to one another.
Peace, Love, and Light,
Amber

A powerful commentary on a sad social situation. But sometimes staying is far sadder than leaving.

H.J., this is such a great write, pain of divorce causes families to suffer, friends feel empty and lost, and ends to become strangers. It's a sad situation to face in life and yes, it does hurt when we see our friends parting & feuding & becoming worst enemies. This gives the reader a lot to think about. You've capture a wonderful topic here in this writing.

One of the saddest things in the world is to watch a relationship disintergrate, be it yours or another. I come from a divorced family myself and yes lived through those silly malicious mindgames. I swore to never do it to my own children and I havent. Unfortunately love so easily turns to hate and selfishness comes to the fore and that is what people without hearts do, without care for those who should be the very centre of their worlds. Do I miss my children? Like the desert misses water, but I will not put them through the manipulations and sickness that I know my exhusband is more than capable of, if I was to pursue contact.
Divorce is to easy, I myself have several friends still married and still deeply in love more than 20 years after they exchanged vows, so I know true love still exists, its just finding the right partner....whether marriage is a good or bad thing for a relationship is debatable imo.

Great write, and even better subject to bring forward.

Marriage vows make you make a promise for life. That means life without parole. I feel that it should be like a business contract, if all goes well, renew the contract for another year, if not cut yore losses and move on! This was a very passionate and well thought out write! We cannot make someone love us, they either do or don't and a piece of paper cannot make them love us either. SC

Yet, I have seen many more of those that have stayed to gether through it all and some how are now learning to live with each other all over again as the children are all finally grown and moved on, both retire and discover that while busy raising children and working they set their own schedules. so I watch as they struggle like newly weds to find a workable rhythm again. There is good out there still. I hope everyone can see them. Lady J

Profound write, poet friend! I can so easily identify with this piece as I'm sure others have or will. We seem to live in an age where selfishness breeds a better image of self than thinking of the other person. Too many things vie for our attentions. Great art piece and sad though true.

I can feel a certain bitterness in this poem, not to be marveled at because the family as a nucleus is breaking down. Society will eventually break down too. The reason: humans are too egoistic. Great poem though.
