A poem for the person who misses children and family, and wonders about the roots of home.
The soft pungent wind
of summer's wet heat
is tumbling off the meadows through the hedge rows
reminding me on its return
that you'll be back again, my child,
you'll be back again.
I can see your eyes a sparkling,
laughing through the breeze,
your hair flowing over your forehead,
your hand upon my cheek once more,
your body next to mine,
as we used to be before.
Yes, you'll be back again, my child,
I feel it in my heart,
the choke arising in my throat,
you'll be back again.
And in the fall, when the gray flocks
wing their rhythmic ways south again,
and the frost clings close to the grasses,
the beat of your heart
comes close to me,
and I know,
you'll be back again, my eye,
you'll see your way home once more.
Should winter fall to spring,
the blossoms will return,
then you'll be coming back again,
I'm sure,
you will come back, my child.
And, if you've been here 10,000 times,
then find that I have gone,
remember, I'll be coming back again, my child
I'll be coming back.
You'll feel me in the churning throats
of spring's vast stormy clouds,
and in June's rising dew,
I'll whisper in your ear.
When snow blows down the frozen roads,
and you've nowhere to go,
know I'll be close at your side,
I'll come back again.
This is our land, our roots are here, my child,
God will it for a thousand years, my child,
we'll be back again.
Jerry, i've missed a lot of good reading in your wonderful web corner. This piece reminds me of the Four Seasons that whisper in our ears year after year, and Father Time who is always with us, season after season. Captivating.
Be well,
Sheri

Absolutely beautiful, Jerry ~ I think this is one of my new favorites.
Far reaching in scope, the call for a prodigal to return home. Beautifully imaged and penned. Especially love the opening lines (the soft pungent wind/of summer's wet heat GORGEOUS).
Jerry Engler, you indeed are one person in this world that has the talent and the knack of spinning a lyrical tale that makes the hair on the back of my arms stand up, that chokes my throat with emotion and that tugs at the melancholy of my heart 'til the tears flow.
"You'll be back again" is another masterpiece.
In their lifetimes, Mark Twain captured the soul of America from one coast to another with his folksy charm, and Kahlil Gibran stirred our hearts and emotions with the phrasing, wisdom and insight of his classic work The Prophet.
And now comes our own Jerry Engler with a style that rightfully has earned him the accolade The Voice of the Heartland.
Jerry Engler, I say without reservation that you are a national treasure!
This is our land, our roots are here, my child,
God will it for a thousand years, my child,
we'll be back again.
A truly wonderful piece, Jerry, filled with wonderful heartfelt sentiments. And you've proven the cynics wrong - we can go home again, if only in our hearts and souls.

This is amazing... a lyrical lament, an epic journey... a truly golden pen.
Welcome!
The poems in this beautifully bound book are a result of over twenty years of observations. Observations of the world around us and on the telecommunications network. All of the hate, love, heroism, disasters, and those who help.

You have me wondering about these "flocks" flying north in the fall. Perhaps the story takes place in the southern hemisphere?
A wonderful sharing, Jerry. I find your "story" most engaging. Thank you for sharing it. Love and peace to you,
Regis
