White-yellow hot,
the afternoon sun
paling the bow
of the broad blue sky,
narry a breeze
to carry away
the Johnny popper exhaust
and the deep humid breath
of the black-turned moist earth
between uncurling leafed rows
of knee-high corn,
a pair of red-tailed hawks
rising high in the thermals,
the old brown and white shepherd-collie
stretched to cool his belly
by the water jug at row's end,
panting patiently, smiling up,
brown eyes of love
on the tractor turns,
the fat field mouse,
running back down the row
behind the weed-turning shovel,
hoping that none of them
noticed him,
the short whine of hydraulics,
the jerk of biting tines
lowered back to waiting soil,
that crumbles apart
with a weight of worms,
Mom on the phone back home
saying with a chuckle
that just like my Dad,
I've been cultivating Ethel's bottom,
the pause on the old wooden bridge,
with the dog barking impatiently
to say "come on let's go,"
looking into the deep green pools
to see the lolling catfish,
the dog bounding joyfully in front
to show the way,
the half-cooked eyes,
the legs that shake from the hours,
Mom and the old dog,
two puns of fun.
You make the simple country life and cultivating rich bottom land sound so wonderful that I might just have to remind myself about how much I enjoy that type of thing.
The imagery is perfectly conveyed so I felt myself to be there enjoying it with you.

You've weaved a wonderful tale and it made me glad to get to know this small part of the world that you brought alive so vividly for us, excellent job- Michelle
Two puns in one, and another row to sow, what a wonderful afternoon to spend with you, and judging by the mouse, Burns would love you too! I enjoyed immensely, rich is the trough of poetic language, like the soul and soil you toiled. Blessings my friend!Jasmin Horst
Jerry, I loved this poem. When I saw the title I had no idea what to expect. This is such lovely writing. Makes me lonely for the memory, even though it is not mine. Beautiful!!

This feels like a wonderful painting or postcard! I imagine this being featured in the magazine "Country." As a rural-ite, I very much enjoyed this.
This poem is rich with imagery. I grew up on a farm and I could smell the soil and see all that you spoke of...and some that you didn't... Fabulously done!
