Indian prayer by a young student
of Red Cloud school, South Dakota

God's Garden

Lord make me your forest
filled with strong healthy trees
to give a home to the birds
in the winter time

Let me be long green grass
to feed the animals

Let me be a stream of fresh water
so all creatures can drink
and let me be cooling shade to refresh
the earth in the heat of summer

by Tanya Clifford

~~~^~~~
Manifestations of ancient episodes
flashing in my brain, times when the
Arapaho roamed the land freely
along with the Buffalo, and their
dances brought on the rain...
Times when clear flowing streams
were more than just dreams, and
beasts and humans respected each
others domain...
Times when the land gave naturally
what it was meant to give, and man
lived unpretencious as he was born
to live the air so clear it was deeply
inhaled the grass so green looked
unreal...
Manifestations of ancient episodes
when Zuni and Navajo used belief in
the spirits to heal, simple times when
simple methods and deeds were
enough to fill the peoples needs...
Though these times we can cherish,
change and progress are innate, and
cannot be made to wait, or man
stagnates. At least we can look back
and say "wasn't it great"!
Awesome mind's eye-view! Depth & description of nature & connection; we're all part of God's creation.
A really beautiful and vivid dedication to a precious way of life. True that, as you write- change and progress are innate- but I think we will once again have to move more in that direction if the earth is to sustain itself. I think that places like that still exist in some corners of the globe, but need to be protected, afterall it is a tradgedy what has happened to many of the Native Americans. Thankyou for this moving piece.
Excellent points Eileen. We have lost so much knowledge by corraling and nearly killing off the Native American population. Knowledge that once lost can never be recovered. ~ Sara
Eileen,
I love the historical inspiration of your poem. Your Imagery took me there.
I live in an area where the native people still live and work among us 'foreigners' if you will.. and still try to preserve the land as much as they can. It provides a way of living for most still... I thoroughly enjoyed your poem Eileen.
On the Badlands, full of buffalow: Sunset. I could sense something mystical, and I'm not in to feeling strange or rather different somethings.
But it was thick with the past in a sad kinda way..
Wonderful poems, most of mankind is willing to respect the earth, but we are somewhat lost....
This is certainly a good example of the good coming out of respecting all things.
Reading these was great, and I often wish that I had lived a few hundred years ago, when mankind did respect and cherish all life forms on this planet.
Not being from US, I cannot exact appreciate this concept. I know some history of US, and I know of the great wars that almost exterminated the Indian people. But not the cause and effect of these wars. I know now Indians live in poverty in reservations, also in Canada. You seem to imply that they cared for the land better than others. That I am prepared to believe. A very inspiring poem. Victor
The wonderful and wise beliefs of the American indian are still the basics from which man can respect the environment. I have many friends who are indian. My boyfriend is from the Oklahoma Osage. His wisdom is very quiet and when he speaks he can fill volumes with wisdom and I listen,'This is a wonderful pen Eileen.
Susan
