I tried Jeff's challenge to
write a poem in poe's style

Last stanza of Poe's poem
"A Dream Within a Dream"

"I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep— while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?"

 Edgar A. Poe

Inspired by the above stanza...

I stood upon the precipice
Looking down on the abyss
Then raised my weary head up high
To seek some answers from the sky
Whilst poverty spreads such despair
Must we deny that it is there?
As brain cells spin out into space
The pall of  helplessness takes place
Cannot I sow one seed of hope?
To make the hopeless learn to cope
O God! is  reality  a theme?
Of living dreams outside the dream

Well done, Eileen... this is very fitting, both in style and sentiment. Almost an echo, in fact. Living the dream, walking the talk, has to be the way to go. Powerful and concrete. TY Kate xx

Well done and a touching write as the picture does explain. To just speak of homeless would have broaden the scope where as Poe spoke of sand though the metaphor for many. I especially liked your last words for much is said of God's plan and lesson we are in this life to learn from. The picture of the mother and child and as it appears another on the way is so beyond my imagination what goes through the mind of a mother who has found herself in that place. Thank you for your write. Lady J

I see why Poe is held in such esteem. I see huddled masses, like grain of sand, in your theme.

It is, I believe, one of the priviledges we have been given sugar chum; too be able to stand in the gap between heaven and hell, and have have at our disposal the tools, and the wisdom, to differentiate between the two and the free will to make a choice. Outstanding!

You have done Poe proud with this
exquisite piece of writing, Eileen.
I have asked the same questions as
you have in this poem. All I can
say is, we must Keep Hope Alive.

Hugs,

Kate

You've met this challenge head on Eileen. Poe is truly an inspiring author. If one can read him without feeling something besides fear and sadness, then I'm not sure they are real. I loved reading Poe in school, and it stayed with me throughout adulthood, for I have several Poe selections in my stack of reading materials.
Job well done!

Such a sadness inspiring another sadness to come out of the shadows.
Both, very well wrote, with a twist of pain here and there.
