Heart-wrenching Decisions

True story about a neighbor, friend

in the blue of evening
her heart sorely grieving
her eyes filled with tears
for all the lost years

would now memories fade
of all the mistakes he made
would she make of him a saint
though he practiced no restraint

the stroke had left him paralyzed
not a person could he recognize
to keep him alive machines were needed
the decision hers to make, she dreaded

for herself she had a living will
he avoided the matter,still
family friends divided on what to do
she couldn't please them all, she knew

she would not watch him vegetate
it wasn't a question of feeling hate
if there was a chance he could recover

but doctors said it was the worst kind
that there was nothing left of his mind
she knew her decision would cause grief
but she couldn't pull the plug, not yet...

this very type of decision was mine to wrestle with -- not quite one year ago -- the turmoil I went through was gut wrenching and soul searching -- I pray I will not have to be compelled to do it again -- my heart and prayers go out to your neighbor -- peace and love to you my dear friend -- JMW

One of the worst decisions any human being ever has to make concerning someone they love. And a living will is definitely the way to express one's desires to our loved ones.

I am a donor, and specifically told that if life can be sustained only by tubes, machines and electronic gadges (my mind I think is long gone a long time ago) to switch off the plug, take everything there is to save as many lives as possible and burn the rest with the ashes to spread on the Arlington lawn (let the rain take me down there)
That desition will make easy to doctors, family and friends to do what I wish, to die with my dignity intact and help someone before the big final Marine's oorah! ! !

I've had to make an important decision about several pets. I cannot imagine having to decide about a person. Your words make me feel the weight she wears on her shoulders. Sad. Hugs,
Sheila

Your deep and undeniably sad poem has brought the vulnerability of every ones life to the fore. One of the hardest decisions to ever have to make....I wish you friend strength and courage as she will know when the time is right.

A very hard piece to write and you captured the true feeling perfectly.

a living will is the key ... a decision that should be made by the individual before finding himself/herself in such a situation ...

It is a hard question to answer... Last night my husband spent three hours in the ER because of anaphalactic shock. While he has had severe allergic reactions in the past, last night was the first time I have ever had to take him to the hospital so that he could breathe... Scary night! It sure made me realize how unprepared I am for him to die!!

This hits close to home . . . There is a man I know whi I believe murdered his wife with the doctor's permission . . . I had just spoke to her one day and a week later she was in the hospital and he told them to not try to help her . . . To let her go . . . Haven't spoken to him since . . . I understand the thought behind that . . . I do not want to linger either, but I would appreciate at least a month or two before the plug is pulled . . . give me that much . . .

At times such as this it is always God who has the final say. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your friend as this is not easy....

Be always safe,
Karen

What a hard decision to make!!! By pulling the plug means everything is so final, and can never be reversed to change. By not pulling the plug is restoring hope that perhaps a miracle would happen. And yes, miracles DO happen everyday in the medical field that even the top doctors are puzzled by the existence. Only God can decide when to call a person home!!!!!

A very gut-wrenching write, but very thought-provoking. I can feel a lot of pain from the author.

Gutwrenching, indeed. Can't bear to watch them suffer, praying for a miracle that may or may not happen: but if the plug is pulled, who's to say? Decision best left up to God. A tough one to read today, Eileen, but very well penned. :(

(((HUGS))) love and prayer, Karla.

My daddy had to make this decision on my mom when she had complications following open heart surgery; it liked to have killed him! No family should ever have to make this decision! Heartwrenching indeed! Yes.

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :( >Tears! <

You are still in my prayers!
