Always wanting a magic wand

O sweet Lord of unconditional love
I keep my eyes on thee above
Please have mercy upon this land
Help us Your ways, to understand

Over and over the same petition
Yet. we never change our position
We want a magic wand to be waved
So our roads will be smoothly paved

We don't want to do the work it needs
To change our ways into good deeds
So we pray by rote the same each day
Leaving the rest to  come what may

When nothing changes we rant and moan
neglecting to admit the fault is our own
It seems we want you as a problem solver
For assets, no need for you to resolve them

A real shame we want a God to
share only our sad never our glad

etw-2009

You make a good point at the end of this poem. I try hard to pray on one hand. I was told to start at the pinky (finger farthest from ME) and that prayer should be for another. When I get to the thumb, I can say something about me. Sometimes it's hard to stick to that, though. Hugs,
Sheila

We don't want a problem solver...we want a yes man...give us what we want, but don't tell us anything is our fault, and don't give us consequences...
Sad...

Eileen,
Well said! You take a strong stand, as always, courageous and outspoken in your views, so refreshing and worthwhile.

As my Mother often said, "God answers every prayer. Usually the answer is 'No"."

This is like a poem that has thankfulness written over the main entrance, and at the altar, give help,,love, forgiveness, truth, wisdom and grace etc.,,,,, to receive it,,,, others need not apply. This write is powerful in its truth! Hugs! Jasmin Horst

I suspect that when God hears prayers offered absentmindedly from rote and not from the heart, He patiently waits for sincerity.

Eileen, I think your closing line about reaching out to God only when things are not going well is very well taken. Perhaps if we develop the consciousness of saying grace at every meal and giving thanks for every small favor we might become more aware that God is always but a prayer away, if it is a prayer offered with purity of heart.

Thank you for pointing out this common human failure and offering your kindly words of guidance. I love especially your opening stanza!

Sad but true, instant gratification is almost a reflex these days. You do know how to bring it home. Warmth and Love to you.

Wouldn't it be great if a magic wand was all it would take to fix all the problems, unfortunately it took man to create them and it will take man to fix them. thank you Eileen for sharing.

How so sadly true, for far far too many, today.

Yes, that magic wand...I hoped I had one on Omaha Beach or Inchon Beach or in Nam. Times when God was busy attending so many desperate wants that for a few moment He looked the other way.

Eileen, How true that is. I know in my life sometimes I wish God would just heal the people I see that are in pain.Without realizing maybe I need to so the work to bring a little comfort to them.Wonderful poem.

Truer words never spoken, Eileen, we want a Genie to fix all the problems, and when He does (in His time, in His way, we forget to thank Him) - thank you for this powerful reminder. Well done!!

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
