out of the depths of darkness rose
the ethereal soul of nude prose
to watch the midnight poets choose
the way to interpret their muse
some of the poets felt the presence
while to others it made no sense
some realize the diversity of talent
knowing few are truly competent
like the age of originality that is past
only a few write works that will last

Eileen, there is great truth in your poem -- and there are poets out there right now, and there are poets of the past -- that never wrote a poem read by any other human being that are conceivably the very best of the lot -- fate and time place unusual twists on our perceptions of reality -- and the relativity of time is an essential ingredient in that luck -- but at poets end, we will all write again, for a little while -- peace and love my friend --Jon Michael

I SUPPOSE I AM A DREAMER. I AM NOT AT ALL INFLUENCED BY THE WORLDS OPINION OF THINGS...ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO POETS. I SAY THIS BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY POETS AND THEIR WORKS THAT I WILL ALWAYS HOLD DEAR AND REMEMBER AND I AM PARTICULARLY SPEAKING ABOUT THE SO CALLED 'UNKNOWN' POET WHOSE WORK WILL ALWAYS BE 'KNOWN' TO ME. I FEEL THE WORD 'COMPETENT' TO BE SO NASTY A TERM WHEN SPEAKING OF A POET'S VOICE...A VOICE THAT SPEAKS FROM SO MANY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES AND IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS... HOW DO WE EVALUATE A PERSON'S HEART AND MIND THAT THEY 'SHARE' WITH US...THEY MAY NOT HAVE SAID IT THEY WAY ONE THINKS THEY SHOULD HAVE SAID IT OR WHAT THEY SAY HAS NO VALUE TO ONE BUT TO THE POET THEY HAVE REACHED OUT IN THE ONLY WAY THAT THEY KNOW HOW AND GIVEN US A SMALL PART OF THEMSELVES...THIS NEEDS TO BE APPRECIATED. ONLY A FEW POETS? THERE ARE WORKS FROM POETS THAT I KNEW AND NOW KNOW THAT I WILL ALWYS TREASURE...THE MEMORY OF THEIR WORKS AND THEM WILL LAST FOREVER. THERE IS ONLY ONE 'GIFT GIVER' AND I REFUSE TO ALLOW THE WORLD AND ITS STANDARDS DICTATE TO ME 'A POET' WHAT IS POETRY AND WHAT IS NOT. I WILL APPRECIATE EVERY 'GIFT' HE GIVES AND I WILL NOT 'EVALUTE' ITS WORTH...I WILL VALUE THE GIVING OF IT. THANKS FOR SHARING AND PLEASE KNOW THIS IS NOT A PERSONAL REBUKE OF YOUR OPINION...THIS IS JUST MY OPINION. BLESSINGS. JOYCE * INSPIRATIONS

there is a wide spectrum of poetic ability as well as emotional and philosophical thought ... a poetic will endure by reaching a wide scope of perspective and naturally having the skill to back it up with creative dexterity and communicative lore ...

Good point- I think there are very few who become the Byrons and Keats of the world because poetry doesn't really sell, and nowadays, that is all big publishers care about. BTW, this was written really well. ;)

I completely agree with this chum. Completely and utterly!
Thankfully poets and poet types have an outlet, though, good or mediocre, insightful or despiteful, shallow or deep, lasting or not.

Many churn the same stuff out over and over again, some are afraid to grow, some think that a lot of reviewers, not substance, are an indicator of success some write as a cathartic to remain sane, whatever the reason, you're correct, some remain etched in the granite deeper than their compeers do.

Blessings ...

This is true on one level, Eileen, but, on the other hand, every word scribed, I'm sure, will have a lasting meaning for someone or other - even if only for the author him/herself. And there is a time and a place for all poetries, I think. Fashions come and go. Most poets somehow only achieve a greater status or recognition post-humously... or post-humourously, in my case! :)) I guess "true worth" might be assessed by a writer's complete canon or body of work, rather than on individual poems' merits. But as long as even one poem means something to just one person, to me that is a work of lasting merit. But I DO know what you're getting at here: most of us, after all, are only "hobbyists", though precious to each other! And often, have to say, preferred to the so-called Great Masters.

PS - thank you for picking up my duff syllable-count in my haiku recently. I'm useless without an abacus... I prefer pretty beads to my rather grubby fingers! :)) xx

They say that people won't remember words so much as the way the words made them feel. I like that thought. Each time I read your work, I feel closer to All-That-Is and my muse feels a lasting kinship to yours.

Poets are like flowers, some go with a bouquet, others to a Ikebana or to a solitary long neck crystal vase or...
Some poets make you cry others make you laugh and yet some provoke you to sight, all different and yet, all are poets!
