The dusk of life
Is gently closing in
Around her.
Alone,
Seemingly forgotten
By all but the nurse
Who sees to her comfort
And reads to her
From her favorite tomes,
She watches the sun's light
Each day
Is followed by the moon's
Each night,
And she waits.
It's been thirty-two years
Since that terrible night
When he gave his life
Saving hers,
Thirty-two years
Of loneliness,
Of days that would have
Seemed empty
If not for the son
He left behind.
But now she feels him
Coming closer,
Coming back for her,
To free her from
The pain and despair
Of the cancer that has slowly
Eaten at her body and spirit.
Soon there will be
No more misery,
Soon she will
Once again know
The joy of his love
Surrounding her.
Soon, she silently begs,
Please, soon.
I read and reread your poem and the poetry reminded me of my own age and got me to thinking of when my time will come and how will I face it. I hope I have the strength to see it as this lady does, not an ending...another beginning.
