(For my crew...also, FYI, I use the term "cocaine donuts" to refer to small, powdered sugar donuts, nothing else. They are the favorite of one of my crew....)

Tommy likes those
cocaine donuts,
Bob, he loves his chocolate,
Tony likes to sniff his nose at
what he won't eat quite yet,
Brian prefers jerky
with burnt offerings of soy,
Russ likes peanut-butter
with his jelly for pure joy,
and Laurie, our own
James Bond Bombshell,
stays away from wheat,
as she disarms with humility
that confounds me,
Rich, the ever-diplomatic-one
goes with the flow,
and Bill, the understated talent
quietly burns slow,
while Rudi, our own favorite ponytail,
charms girls with hugs,
Brent, our in-another-lifetime-bodyguard, just shrugs
while working hard
and asking random things
like, "where's the broccoli?"
Mikey talks real fast,
and works so hard,
sometimes he can't see,
and Nick is anal-retentive
enough to help us through
the long days while
his own help lies in
Red-Bull
bottle brew.
Natalie, the young beauty
who truly doesn't see
what she has in her face,
in this, grace adds to her sheen,
and Jamal works his ass off
while his disposition reigns,
Mike and Jo manage
from The Grand, Blue Victorian....
Cassandra prefers donuts plain,
they contrast her nicely,
Kimberly likes gold fish crackers
says, "they smile back at me!"
Though pesky undercurrents
can drift,
clique-ish language fits
only for a little while.
The repetition drip;
of jabs and jokes;
of hours broken
with hot cups of coffee;
and cocaine donuts,
chocolates, peanuts,
Brazil nuts and toffees,
save us from the petty
things that Karma keeps for later.
Ice-bags can get heavy
sometimes, pastries serve as baiters
for a waistline, that somehow
has shrunk, two inches-
somewhat.........
....must be abstaining
while sustaining
with

Cocaine Donuts...

Next Arrivals by Robin Ouzman Hislop

Robin Ouzman Hislop's poetry is certainly in dialogue with some of the key architects of the 'poetics of indeterminacy' – both the Modernist strands represented by the likes of Beckett and Stein, and the postmodernist strands represented, initially,
