Without Love

it is an indescribable thing
sometimes indiscernible

hidden deep inside a heart
never venturing out into the
harsh light of possible rejection

too shy to show its face
or state its case

sometimes it takes the form
of a connection of souls
or even a contest of wills

it gives and gives and often
receives nothing good for its pain

it can shine like a beacon
lighting our way through the storm
in the darkest of our seas

give us the answer we sought
when down on our knees

it can be gentle or intense
undemanding or ravenous
tolerant or possessive

love is a short bridge
connecting long distances

it dries the tears of a friend,
love holds their hand
and tells them they are beautiful

love cannot deny itself
even if it is denied by another

it absorbs and merges with a lover
but it can never be self absorbed
or unreasonably hurtful

love is the essence of grace and faith
and the evidence of unseen wonders

it gives us a reason to hope
a joy in living, a home for our heart
how could we live without love?
