Free Bird
By La Belle Rouge

you lived it rough little Maya, too rough
you knew how it felt to be cold and hungry
and have old men touching your young flesh
to be a mother with no father for your young
you knew why the caged bird sings then you
translated her complicated song into lyrics
so plain all the other caged birds understood
you sang, wrote about, looked toward freedom
and then you caught it…. like a fox on the run
you rose, you triumphed over every adversity
you left us the remembrance of your strength
and some of the most inspiring poetry written
Go With God and the angels, Maya Angelou
we have lost a great poet and a great lady

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
By Maya Angelou

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

What a privilege to enjoy your poem, La Belle,
poem-tribute to the fine and widely celebrated
poet and civil rights activist...and Her verse
...a song...pray for freedom...organized into
exquisite stanzas...reflects the most admirable
sensitivity and talent and accomplishments in field
of endeavor after...meaningful, fulfilled, worth
celebrating personal life.
Remember Her words: "My vision in life is not
merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with
some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some
style"....You are a rainbow in our clouds, Maya.
Rest in Peace! Dr Maya Angelou.
Thank you La Belle.

A fine tribute, Belle. Let us hope that Maya will be happy on this next "stage" of the journey. Perhaps some day we will meet her in person. Love and best wishes,

Regis

RIP Maya, you will rise now to be with the angels. No sadder sight than poets weeping.
