37 years today - our Home was taken away. A fire swept through but we were okay. You see, Christmas had come and gone, and my Father and I were up at dawn.
He was taking me shopping to
buy me some treats,
an outfit like my sister’s
and something quite sweet.
My Dad was a comic and I thought he was fooling, when he put down the pump as he was refueling.
I sat still in the car and stared at his face. He started the car and began to race. I will never forget the chaos I saw, the trucks and the smoke. It seemed like a war.
These men were upset, they thought little me, was in the house sleeping with all the debris. How happy there were to find it untrue . One Fireman looked up and just said, “Thank you”.
Then he took out a cigarette
and started to smoke.
He said, “Smokes awful.”
and that was no joke.
These men and our neighbors
came quickly to help,
They brought food and clothing
and made my heart melt.
So when the world hurts me
and lets me down, I start to remember that day in my town.
There are many people that live every day, thinking just of themselves and only today. But then something happens
and humanity springs. It comes on them quickly and out come their wings.
January 5th in 1965,
is a day that will haunt me
as long as I am alive.
You see it was the last day my family held fast, to each other in a moment that sure would not last.
A couple weeks later reality hit,
quite hard to us all I have to admit.
You cannot escape, there is always a price. My Daddy was sickly and he lost his life.
So you see there is pleasure in all of this pain. Sit down with me sometime and I will explain. Explain how a tragedy can bring a good feeling, of closeness and loving and even some healing.
The 5th of January is a day I remember, as the day, that my Daddy was with me forever.
