A poem about an older man watching the world go by, from his front porch
My muse came to me, and I had to write this down as I was singing it!
There's a man
and he sits and rocks on his front porch as the world goes by,
his life's been long
but he knows its length means time ends soon and he will die.
He sees the faces
of his children, of friends lost from times gone by.
He sees the anger and the hatred,
the loss of hope that makes the mamas cry.
He sees the youth
and in their eyes he sees no semblance of respect,
the things their parents worked hard for
are things that they reject.
He watches as the world goes by
and lifts his voice in prayer.
He sees the state the world's in and knows
it needs the man "up there".
He thanks the Lord for waking him
and his blessings by the score,
for the food that's in his belly
and he thanks him then some more.
The comfy bed he sleeps in,
the roof that shelters him from storms,
the moonlight in the darkness and
sun's rays in the morns.
There's a man rocking on his front porch and he's
watching the world go by,
his memories tag him backwards
and they sometimes make him cry,
but he sits
and rocks
and prays to God
and thanks him by the score,
then he counts his blessings,
prays again,
and rocks a little more.
