How I had surgery yesterday on my left knee and I came very close to having anesthesia awareness. I did have it back in August of 1990 and so it must have decided to reappear again. UGH!!!!
My Surgery-A nightmare!
There was a question of anesthesia awareness. I had awoken during brain surgery, a shunt revision, back in August of 1990. The anesthesiologist assured me that medicine had changed since then and I would be a okay! Well………..
In the Operating room, I was relaxed from medicine, but still awake. The anesthesiologist gave me the shot & put a mask of oxygen on my face. Then, they started cutting, Yes, CUTTING ON MY KNEEand I COULD FEEL IT!
I had just enough awareness left in me that I SCREAMED in my mask and said that I ”CAN FEEL THAT!” She was very surprised, the anesthesiologist, and gave me extra medicine!
It took me an Extra Two Hours to Wake Up from Anesthesia! I was the only one left in post-op that morning at noon! I was so late my Sign Languageinterpreter had to leave! That was okay though, because I read lips too!
My knee is doing just fine though, swollen a little yet I can put a little more weight on it every day. I can actually almost walk WITHOUT crutches!
I get stitches out next Thursday.

I have never heard of the "awareness" thing before. I know that for me, with my background in drug usage, many years ago when I was young and stupid, short of the herb, when I go to the oral surgeon they sometimes have to pump extra anesthesia into me as I have trouble falling asleep...that maybe similar to what you go thru but it still sounds quite scary & of course painful for you...keep exercising that leg and you will be playing hop scotch again before you know it, LOL!
