I really can't abide politicians, taxes and all the attendant hypocracy and corruption. I really would shoot tax collectors given half a chance - I believe there's substantial historical precedence...

I won’t pay their taxes

Or play by their rules

Won’t vote in elections

For mendacious fools

When I see tax collectors

I reach for my gun

Shooting the bastards

Would be so much fun

Don’t care for collectives

They’re social disease

Don’t like national objectives

They’re written in sleaze

I’d rather drink beer

Than vote at the booths

Rather hassle and jeer

Than encourage the fools

ALL polits are liars

Who steal when they can

Corrupted soul buyers

Who’s words we should can

We think that we live

So free and so proud

But they steal from our wages

And disburse to the crowd

Alone we are born

And alone we will die

So let’s live life as kings

And abandon the lie

Kill the lie of the nation

Kill the evil of race

Kill the dead hand of taxation

Let’s freedom embrace

So let’s vote with our feet

And abandon the trash

Let’s tear politicians

Away from our cash

As long as we pay

For their lies with our tax

Their wars will go on

And our freedoms they’ll trash

They read all our emails

And intercept our calls

They track us on cameras

They treat us like thralls

While children go hungry

They feed at the trough

Like pigs in a restaurant

They can't get enough

They slaughter our children

In battles  for oil

But keep their own safe

Far, far from war's roil

Enslaved we all are

Though we think that we’re free

Democracy’s finished

There’s just you and me

One could say that tax collectors are doing their job just like someone could torture a Jew because he was doing his job. What I mean is that if we are free, than the job we choose says a lot about us! :-)

Why have we become so frightened of criticism? Protest is probably the right word and in today's narcissistic society, we don't even need oppression anymore. Everyone's so obsessed with their image that nobody speaks up. Being indifferent and self-absorbed is not being moderate; it is a crime!

At first, I thought your poem was good and provocative, but then... there isn't a single line that isn't true! Therefore I think that this is simply great!

Keith,

This is a passionate piece! There are so many problems with the way things are set up currently. I can't help but wish that a real-life Robin Hood would breeze through the world, lightening cushioned pockets! Robin Hood is such an old tale, too - meaning this particular problem has been around for too long. It's the only system we have, though. I see no relief in sight, no active groups trying to abort these thieving laws. They are getting away with more and more as time passes, too. Great poem & a wonderful way to get these frustrated feelings out! Love the third to last verse especially!

Come on, Keith... Politicians are b******s, true, but tax collectors - they're just doing their job. And hey, they do pay taxes too. Perhaps antagonizing our society is a part of their (politicians') agenda?

Freedom, basically, is a relative concept. For a guy held in a prison in the totalitarian country the freedom is being out of prison, for his 'free' compatriot it's living in democracy. For myself, I'm free whenever I feel I am. Since freedom is subjective it cannot be measured in an objective way.

Great poem.

So you are another who sees through the haze and the talk. Our country is still a great one, make no mistake. The system set up was for all our sake. It is the corruption by sleezy politicians that have stolen the free from the freedom, but it is also all our fault for allowing all this to happen by turning away and not giving a second look. Great write....

Be safe,
Karen

Keith, you are like sunshine to wake up to, you despite the serious terrorist inclinations in your verbage, brought out a good chuckle.
While we are busy fighting the terrorists outside the country, we have plenty in town especially up on the hill. Much sunshine to you today! Jasmin Horst

Only problem, Keith: if we don't vote? We have no right to complain. :) Don't trust 'em either, but I vote for change. Maybe one day, they'll remember whom they serve.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

"We The People" have become less and less important to today's politicians. "They," in the words of Mark Twain, are the best men money can buy.

Good poem.

Keith,

I have to agree with your poem "Freedom" on many levels. However, I would rather have democracy than any other form of government. It is this democracy that allows you and me the freedom of speech. It is in democracy that you and I have the freedom to write what we think, when we think it, about any topic. Are there flaws, sure there are. Is there work to be done? Labor, hard labor and test of time in order to bring democracy on the original course set out forth by our forefathers. Certainly there is much work for us to do, as we haven’t gotten far of course. My question is where is the pre-established government is “For the People”, By the People”? Politicians use to serve for free….no wages for their term in office. Now, they work for vacations and pensions, lucky if they show up the floor to vote at all. We are broken, but lets not shoot them all yet. Lets re-group and find the strength to muster up the courage, to take a stand and being this great nation back into the “Promised Land”.
