During the holiday season depression can set in and suicide rates rise. Usually they call it the “winter blues.”

Obsessive thoughts plaque his mind
Looking for a permanent solution
A suicidal mission helped him unwind

A most selfish and self-serving deed
Turn to good friends first
When you are in desperate need

Failed attempt to end his sorrow
But he will ultimately mend
There is always a brighter tomorrow

Never give up your important life
You need people and they need you
Learn to live without thoughts of strife

For you are very valued by others
Whatever bothers you deep inside
Never push it deep under the covers

Seek help and you shall find
Confide and they will light the way
Just know when it is the right time

Life is a beautiful gift you must know
Any issue can be resolved
So reach out and love will just grow

The beauty of growing old--at least for me--is that I no longer find reasons to feel sorry for myself that once caused me to think of suicide. Now, whatever problems I face, I don't associate them with dying in order to find peace; I associate them with challenge to give meaning to life.

". . . You need people and they need you"

This line stood out for me...I think those who think of ending their life are those that feel they are dispensable and unneeded.
Your poem is full of insight and leaves a lingering message, allowing the reader to see that there is help out there, just reach out!
Great job!

Staci, it's amazing how many people in this world suffer from depression and never seek medical help because they carry a stigma about mental health issues. I wish all of these people could realize that mental health issues is like any other medical conditions and they can be treated. I pray many people will read this poem & seek medical help. A nice write!

Great poem, thoughts and advice.
I hope people will notice those that are in trouble and reach out with a helping hand or at least with compassion.

I know all to well the effects of depression and often the sucicide victim is giving a cry for attention..this theory has led all to often to people ignoring them with comments such as "If they really wanted to do it they would." This is such a falsehood, too many people have died from the illness of depression because no one took the time to reach out...lets be there and offer them hope not empathy.

Staci~

People wouldn't feel this way if they get back to the REAL Reason for the Season: The Birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ! No wonder people are unhappy: they let the commercialism get to them! Sad!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(

Staci,

Boy, you've penned a strong one today. Many get caught up in the trappings of the holiday, forgetting the Reason for the Season. No wonder so many are unhappy! Excellent.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

A beautiful write Staci, very caring, too many hurt at this time of year and it is mostly because Christmas has the wrong meaning. We seem to forget it is the celebration of the birth of Baby Jesus not of how many gifts are under some well lit tree. Thank you for sharing.
