What will it be like to be dead?

What will it be like not to be?

Will it be like dreaming in bed?

Dreaming to be a bumbling bee?

Will it be good? Will it be bad?

Will there be laughter or just tear?

Will there be pain? Will it be sad?

Will there be joy? Will there be fear?

Maybe there will be just darkness,

Soft as velvet, darker than night,

Or pierced through with agile starkness,

A white streak of eternal light.

Maybe a gentle voice will sing

A melancholy lullaby

With silvery tone, caressing

My soul, ready to purify.

Perhaps there will be just nothing.

Nothing, nothing, nothing at all…

Vast emptiness, all embracing,

Without hope of clarion-call.

Maybe a great shore-less blue lake

- Home to a solitary swan –

Will be the place where I shall wake,

Reborn as an innocent fawn.

Who can tell what life is about?

And who can tell what death will be?

Life is learning, death has the clout;

Certainly, what will be will be.

I enjoyed this write, Peter...
I think there is no one who hasn't wondered what the moment of death holds for them. It's a step no one can ever take for you. Awesome write!

As you probably presume, Peter, we are all confronted with this question sooner or later: "What will it be like not to be ... in this existance level anymore?"

Your poem - in its simplicity lies the wisdom - reminds me at the same time of both my fears and of my confidence in Adon Olam, the Master of the Universe. I wish thus all now confronted with this issue lots of strength and courage - to say nothing of faith.

Peter, if and when you leave us, there will be a dark void in my life because your voice will be silenced. I believe we watch over those still here that we loved and who loved us. I believe we try and guide them in the Creator's footsteps and on the path chosen for them. I believe when they hit a boulder in their lives, we help them over by giving them a hand and look over the horizon with their eyes and see the wonder of their lives.

I believe we meet with the other's that touched our lives and are content to be. To me death is just the end of one circle and the beginning of a new journey...

Ah, the consumate philosopher thinking on death as do all good philosophers eventually...I enjoyed this read, as I have these questions permeating the outer edges of my sanity or insanity as well...Peace brother Poet, Ed & Rufuz (read "One Persons Take on Philosophy" as it has similar direction, of sorts...)
