Hanging upside down in a fleshy cave,
Listened to gurgling sounds the colon gave,
The water around me ready to drain…
Life will never be so cosy again…
Why get out?… Later, Pėter…
Sitting in my high chair hungry as hell,
Releasing an angry, desperate yell,
Urging Mum to hurry with the blessed food.
Does she ever listen? If only she would…
She just says: "Later, Pėter…"
Sitting on my school-bench, hand up in air,
Waiting to be noticed, it just isn't fair,
My bladder's in spasm, I really must go,
I put my hand up long minutes ago…
Teacher says: "Later, Pėter…"
Bombs falling all 'round; the world had gone mad,
Frightened I shiver and shake under the bed,
Drone of aircraft and bombs, that's all I hear…
Grab mother's hand… "Please lets get out of here!"….
She whispers: "Later, Pėter…"
Running from the Nazis, life is no fun…
"Why do I deserve this? What have I done?
If I am a Jew, why lie and deny?"
"Let's stop this charade, it's easy to die…"
"No, not yet!… Later… Pėter…"
I'm in puberty… girls are on my mind…
Falling in and out of love… love is blind…
"When will the right girl come along?" - I ask.
"I can't concentrate on any odd task."
They just shrug: "Later, Pėter…"
Nazis, Communists, when will it all end?
It's enough to drive you right round the bend.
Want to live in freedom! Too much to ask?…
Do we have to live hid' behind a mask?…
Be cautious… Later, Pėter…
At last the "right girl"… I want her so much…
There's ache in my heart and pain in my crutch…
I look in her eyes and beg her: "Be mine."
She smiles at me and says: "That will be fine,
But not yet… Later, Pėter…"
Revolution… bloodshed… mayhem and dread…
Not enough tears for crying for the dead.
On the run again… will this be the trend?
Can we be happy?… will this ever end?
No answer… Later… Pėter…
The "right girl" and I… we now have a son.
We live in freedom and bright is the sun.
"Let's have a daughter, I think it is time,
Why wait? If we miss, it would be a crime."
She just smiles. "Later, Pėter…"
My Mum's in coma… there is no hope…
Her heartbeat is faint through the stethoscope.
Watch her anxiously, feel the need to cry,
"Oh dear Mother, are you going to die?"
She looks up: "Later, Pėter…"
We have a son and daughter… grandsons too…
Our retirement is now long overdue,
We worked long and hard, life is getting tough,
"Can we retire?"- I ask - "I had enough."
She just nods: "Later, Pėter…"
I'm tottering towards an open grave,
Thanking the Lord for everything He gave.
Look into my grave then up to the sky,
Saying: "Here am I Lord, ready to die."
But he says: "Later, Pėter…"

Footnote:
In Hungarian my first name is spelt "Pėter" (with an accent on the first "e").
Hungarian is a phonetic language. The accent on the first "e" signifies a different sound from the way "e" is pronounced in the English language. The "ė" in Pėter sounds like "a" in "later" thus making "Later Pėter" a perfect sounding rhyme.
I have enjoyed the reading of "Later… Pėter…".
