Late Afternoon Sunsets

Based on a painting of the same name by one of my favorite painters, Childe Hassam- 1903, oil on canvas.

I had this written as "she" originally, but "I" felt better as I was writing it, but this in no way means the "I" is me, as my art poems come to me because the pictures "speak" to me, and this is how it felt this time, not because it is autobiographical.

Poem Artwork

I realized that it was always in late afternoons

when the setting sun glowed an orange-pink

that I met myself worshiping at the stone ruins

for the peace and earth always made me think

In a unsettling haze of both browns and grey- greens

he rested in slippers and blanket in the heart of my mind

we had no need for eyes tightly closed within this dream

for even in the dark of night this love was so easy to find

I was sure that if I loved him even a little bit more

that the edges of mine very own heart might burst

and the remembrance of even the smallest of things-

his smile, his eyes, his chest- made it worse

On nights like this I wanted to be buried with him

deep beneath soft blankets and the whitest of snows

cloud filled skies a November grey above us

our warm love being made down below

God, I love him without reason,

passion’s slave as Dostoevsky once said,

but this love lasts beyond late afternoon sunsets,

like the ones in the great books that I’ve read

Your last stanza is awesome and must tell a lot about you. And not only does your measured verse but your Bio page with it's wonderfully enlightened lists of writers and artists tells me of a lady who is well read and loves history. I too have a fondest for many you mention, especially Dostoevsky (since my college days)
Take care 'til next time... michael

This is so sweetly sentimental, and dreamy at the same time. A surreal imagery painted out of deep love that even death cannot take away. This is a timeless piece of art!

Very lovely and softly romantic. If a painting can inspire such superb work, you surely have been inspired!

The sense of losing someone well loved runs strong through "Late Afternoon Sunsets". The strongest image for me was "he rested in slippers and blanket in the heart of my mind" The power of this line comes from the intimacy involved--that history between two people reaching a place where their love has built a nest of familiar comfort becoming a heaven on earth that so many never achieve. I'm reminded of the aunt and uncle that raised my father. Married seventy-five years when he left and a year later she left. Her last words were her husband's name and that she was on her way. My dad was on his knees by her bed holding her hand and she slipped away. I must have been six or seven at the time. Thank you for this painting in words.
