This is based on a painting of the same name by Leah Lopez. It also has a blend of things from my life (though I have never been married, thank GOD) and fiction, so this is a character, not personal.

Here is a link to the artist's beautiful site from which this painting featured has come.

Poem Artwork

she couldn't go back there anymore to that place

previously scarred by her rape and disgrace

camouflaged aggression on a pink petal sheet

now more darkness to taint the place where they'd meet

he sat at the table, drinking and drinking all night

the golden pitcher gleamed even in low candlelight

she never understood how she ended up with this fate

or how he could douse himself in that drink of self-hate

he threw everything everywhere, onto the clean floor

he threw coins, and old clothes and the anger he'd store

he soured the grapes and then bruised the plum

broke all the plates and then drank all the rum

he tore down the places of the girl you can't see

jabbed knives of words into what once was free

a short little drunk who slurred when he talked

red face and beer belly, a swizzle stick that walked

his fingers gripped at the nothingness within his life

praying light wouldn't reveal the things he'd done to his wife

praising God and then betraying him with every cruel turn

and he entered the church, yet no Words would he learn

he's asleep there beside that golden pitcher he loved

more than himself, or another, or his own God above

gorging his face with the food left too long, going bad

more bitter poison to feed the delusions he had

she left and closed the door on the wreck of their lives

on the arguments, the emptiness and his spewing of lies

for her the golden pitcher was worth naught but such pain

and her poverty is much better than his life gone insane

Michelle, the personalities at play here, you bring vividly to life -- through the verbal images created with your words -- I often ponder, what makes a man such a despicable human being? -- what allure could he possibly have held, for any woman? -- you have posed questions to be contemplated by each reader -- as usual my friend, great writing -- peace and love -- Jon Michael

Katie Chopin comes to mind.
Your works suggest an awsome wife,
yet your soul suggests a Carmilite.
A wife or a Carmilite is both yours to ponder.

Your works show inner depth and beauty.
Beauty within. that so many Carmilites shared.
You have that perfect gift. Paradox, it is, for the world needs such a mother. Maybe a mother of the church, with many mystic books in her perfect head?

Which ever way you go, only God will show.
Your style is perfection.

What a brutal, disturbing scene made even more painful by how well it's portrayed.

Michelle,
The devil is in the detail here, the narrative compelled by anguish and written with skilled conviction.

Very intense and deep with anguish and pain...the world of passion and love strips all too often our ability to keep smiling and hold onto the good memories and still go on with our lifes. The man in this picture was lost and gripped in a life he couldn't escape so it was well that she found her escape and her freedom to live on and someday maybe love again.
