This is based on the painting "La Fornarina," c. 1520, by Raphael Sanzio. I found out afterwards that the model was rumored to be one of his lovers, so that part was pure luck, lol, or maybe it is something in the eyes when we love that can't be erased but can be captured by the object of the gazing. Or, I could just be full of crap :) I'd go with the latter if I were you ;)

Poem Artwork

Unobserved but for the small greying man,

his paintbrush flicking, a dragon’s tongue,

wrapped red around her pale bare back,

pushing her small hand to cup her breast

.

The weight of it in the palm of her hand,

that of an orange ripened to sweetness,

a mouth to partake of its fleshy delights,

nothing but a glimpse of his imagination.

Rendered on canvas with a knife’s edge,

cutting through the thick of the paint,

one touch more where she places her fingers,

the peeking eye of one brown nipple revealed.

Sweat rolls down the man’s wrinkled forehead,

yet the taste of salt remains on her full lips,

opened to a slit when her breath pulls in,

this masterpiece of his final creation.

She looks like a very rude girl to me.

Good poem.

Aren't all models lovers? Even Mona Lisa? He does depict her in stark, realistic tones. Her hair appears to be too tight and her skin, to fair and flabby for young woman. But then, as you point out, he was older and probably not as picky as he was in his youth. The poet can speculate upon what was really the truth or not. She does strangely resemble my former sister-in-law.

Wonderfully inspired poem!
There is balance to your words, artistry and sensuality in every line.
I agree with your musings about the eyes!
Blessings,
Christine
