Based on the painting, "Restful Moments," by Roman Frances, as well as inspired by the music and lyrics of Jamey Johnson. Jamey inspires me no end to be a better writer, and Roman's paintings have such emotion, a second looking at them gives a million ideas. See his website below :)

Poem Artwork

So much promise in your small hometown,

Prettiest Homecoming Queen who ever wore the crown,

So much promised now from men of lies,

That hide behind grey suits and patterned ties.

Pretty Rose, you still have so much to learn,

About the way that fame and fortune’s earned,

But Jesus still hangs there silent round your neck,

For when you find your way again, and self respect.

American as apple pie, born and raised on bad T.V.,

Wild eyes, it’s no surprise, just who you’re gonna be,

Face and flesh, the colors mesh, on the cover of a magazine,

Now there’s next to nothing left, they haven’t already seen.

Pretty Rose, you still have so much to learn,

About the way that fame and fortune’s earned,

But Jesus still hangs there silent round your neck,

For when you find your way again, and self respect.

Hide behind the oft-told lies and roses bleeding red,

Forget your name, and all the pain, of lying in his bed,

No one will see the tears you cry, or the hole within your heart,

If you just smile for the camera as your world is torn apart.

Pretty Rose, you still have so much to learn,

About the way that fame and fortune’s earned,

But Jesus still hangs there silent round your neck,

For when you find your way again, and self respect.

She dangles that silver crucifix from her finger’s end,

Amazed at how quickly, the past and future blend,

Bags packed, she don’t look back, grabs keys to her car,

Going home now, all alone, to gaze on Heaven’s star.

Pretty Rose, you still have so much to learn,

About the way that fame and fortune’s earned,

But Jesus still hangs there silent round your neck,

For when you find your way again, and self respect.

Michelle, this reminds me of my pastor's children sermon..about how wearing a cross around our neck, or the right clothing on the outside does not necessarily make one a Christian. Only being right on the inside can do that! Again, so well done! Blessings...Frances

I really like this. . . .BUT. . . .
4X on the refrain (Chorus) is a bit much
2X I think would suffice.

This bitter-sweet reverie is a telling portraiture in miniature.

I enjoy it very much.

A pure epistle in poetic form.
