A Special Person

 He met her in a special place

of holding

barred and protected from the world

a prisoner of her own ailing

striking to see

deformed from head to toe

Maria, remarkably was always a glee

no matter what, her face a glow

A Rosary of wood hung around her neck

for 18 years she prayed

with the stumps of her hands frayed

simply she could not hold during prayer

so she used her mouth and teeth with care

to pray for others

as visitors would stare

in awe, overcomed...

she bore prayer without neglect

day after day

she had no eyes or ears

or a face for that mattered not

This special child of God

A sufferer of leprosy

you wouldn’t know

but for her specialty

she was beautiful inside and out

in perfect union with God’s destiny

A witness to extreme physical hardship

Maria spoke loudly without speaking

Her life wrote of a living testament

of devotion and caring

powerful prayers

an example of selflessness
