Puff . . . Puff . . . Pass

I was watching television and saw a program on babies born addicted to crack. It broke my heart and it is penned below.

Puff . . . Puff . . . Pass

© 2007 by April Sims

Because of puff . . . puff . . . pass

I’m in an incubator and wearing a mask

Because of puff . . . puff . . . pass

I’m hanging on for my very life

The doctors don’t know what to do

And the nurses have no clue

Because of puff . . . puff . . . pass

The chaplain has been in several times to pray with you

You were five months pregnant with me

But you chose the pipe over me

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

Because of your selfishness

I was born four months early addicted to crack

And not fully developed yet

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

If I make it through this, which the doctors say is hit or miss

I then have to worry about your addiction

The one you passed on to me sealed with a kiss

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

This is not the thing you should be proud of

But this is your legacy

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

As my last breaths are taken before your very eyes

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

I hope you remember all your lies

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

You know the ones you told to the doctors

When they asked you about drugs

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

The very ones that robbed me of hugs

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

I think this is my last

(((cough cough cough)))

My last breath

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

And I hope you properly remember me

Puff . . . puff . . . pass

By getting yourself some help

And becoming drug free

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

I loved you mommy

My sister, I know first hand of the addiction that held and holds me on occasion captive. Writing has helped in so many ways and I hope that the ones fighting this disease read your words..They are filled with God..

Yes, this is so tragic, the number of crack babies. Many will die, but some will continue this legacy. Too bad these crack mom's won't see themselves in this.
