(this challenge was very tough... that was a lot of words, Sherry!)
It started with the pop top hangin’ from a shoelace ‘round my neck. A high school bum with a motorcycle and a black eye found me sittin’ on a hollow log. Sweet, shy…
By the riverbank, that bad boy lay me down. Stardust in my eyes, alone and free, I let that blue-eyed devil blind my sight, shed his flip-flops, make love to me all night.
That foggy night a spider bit my ass from the dew-dropped sweet Kentucky bluegrass. Next mornin’ we put on our sun glasses – (mine over newly broken eye glasses)
And we rode out to see the waterwheel at Old Cooper’s Mill. That sealed the whole deal, and I tap danced in my saddle shoes, high steppin’ on the brick wall with my new guy.
That summer we had hotdogs, soda-pop, sunset marguerites on ice box top, cruisin’ on his brother’s motorboat fine with his two servicemen friends drunk on wine.
I believed my beau would make it one day, his moneymaker schemes from the freeway stands to cockfightin’ nights, but his checkbook had a balance like a donut hole – one look
Sent me underground to heartbreak hotel. He called; I said I didn’t feel so well Tired of the roller coaster, sand dunes crashin’ down, I looked hard for ancient runes
In paperclips bent backwards to pieces, and in meatballs I ate with my nieces. Outside, I hit a rim shot. Things came clear. I’d meet him at the sandbox, wipe my tear.
But when I arrived, I went ice cube cold, he was there kissin’ my friend, Marigold. He had on a bow tie and she was dressed to kill. I ran home angry and depressed.
I threw my melted lipstick, Passion Pink, in the icebox, cried in the kitchen sink, then took my empty heart out on the town to hokey-pokey with a circus clown.
The post office sent his letter to me (filled with sawdust for all I cared, you see). He loved me, wanted me back, could I tell? I wrote back, “Not a snowball’s chance in hell.”
WOW! I think you fit just about every challenge word into this poem somehow, Dawn. I am impressed at your captivating poetic story, and your supurb challenge entry.
In a post-coup America, an Illinois farm boy is drawn into the resistance by his brother's death. Captured, he is given a choice: betray his friends, or the girl he loves will be lobotomized.
