Friendless, loveless,
  without benefit of safety, a home,
devoid of grace,
  she drives the mean streets often and alone.

Cast off, put out,
  she does the best she can to raise her son.
Left out, shoved off,
  he blames her now for what others have done.

Searching, reaching
  for a little break, someplace to belong,
weeping, longing
  for love to take root, grow and right the wrong.

Cut off, shut out,
  she wages war against her circumstance.
Opting out, turning off,
  all she wanted was just another chance.

Singing, bringing
  wildflowers bunches like she never had,
Hearing, watching,
  some say they wish they’d known her, “all so sad.”

Turned off, zoned out,
  they fail to recognize the harm they did –
tired out, sealed off
  in happy places, of harsher world rid.
