Dwelling Place

Here, on this tiny spinning sphere,
in a vast universe of spinning spheres and pulsing stars,
is God’s dwelling place.

Spirit becomes flesh and Creator
endures the many vulgarities characteristic
of our home, this Earth.

Into a garden of plenty,
corrupted by our willful choice to taste forbidden fruit,
God enters. Love comes.

Into heart enticed by darkness,
light breaks forth. And we are changed in the twinkling of an eye,
made new from within.

It begins with a girl willing
to embrace a mystery, with a boy who puts aside
a clamoring crowd.

She: overshadowed by Spirit.
He ignores the whispers, tunes his heart to an angel who
appears in a dream.

Now I still the whirling questions
in my mind, breathe deeply of grace. The miracle begins
with me and with you.

It begins in us all as we
make room within for the Christ child to be born here, again,
as in the stable.

Ponder the mystery of this
recurrent miracle: God chooses to come, to dwell here,
among and within.
