Up from the Waters and Into the Desert

Up from the waters
rose the carpenter from Nazareth.

Down from the heavens
descended dove-like Holy Spirit.

And God spoke, saying,
“You are my own dear son, and I am
         pleased with you.”

Up from the waters
rose a young girl, baptized by water.

Following Jesus,
carpenter, the babe in a manger,

She wanted to walk
in his footsteps, closer there to God,
            Love’s essence.

Up from the waters
she walked willingly into desert.

Tempted to quit, just
turn stones to bread, she waited instead.

Angels protected
and guarded first frail seedlings of faith,
            whispered hope.

Up from the waters
she stepped into the Way, following

Pioneer of faith
to those places to which God led her.

She knows that there will
be light enough for the next right step.
            She’ll walk on.
