No Place to Go

Yesterday she sat on the corner
of the far lane on an exit ramp off I-85.
I saw her from my car as I was
on my way to work, contemplating all
the headaches of the holidays
and thinking how pathetic that I couldn’t
afford stamps to send cards
this year. She looked like me... except
for the cardboard sign that
read, “No place to go. Hungry.”
Her face said it was no sham.
It was thirty-four degrees outside at
8:30 in the morning and
she didn’t have any gloves. Shivering
at the thought of how cold
the world must seem to her, I tried to
maneuver my car across
  two lanes of traffic. Unsuccessfully.
I don’t know what I was
going to say or do, but I know when
the light changed and I
had to move on, I cried. And then
I prayed. And so today
I hold my favorite butterfly earrings,
black on gold, an extra PB&J
sandwich and a million wishes I could
help her see that she
is still as beautiful as ever, that she
matters in this city
of many million, that she is not forgotten
by One who fed body
and soul, who can take parcels proffered,
paltry in comparison
to her hungry need, and proliferate joy
and satisfy her every longing.
I cannot give her wings to fly, and my
resources are too limited
to make a lasting difference, but I
will not drive by again.
I move to the far right lane, anticipating
her presence there
on the corner. But I do not find her there
this morning. The light
changes and I move on, butterfly earrings
dropping to car floor.
Tears form, and then a wordless prayer,
for her and those like her
whose wishes waft on a wintry wind of want,
hungry, with no place to go.

Dawn it is times like these that my hope and prayers for humnity are answered! You are blessed with a saviors heart and you will receive the reward in His time. You have been touched by a homeless young woman, in return you have touched us ,and you know not how many more.
May you have a wonderful Christmas and may His prosperity visit you!
love and hugs, Eileen

Oh, so powerful, Dawn. I pray for this girl as her own story continues, but what she has brought you to, also, is immeasurable. Next time, you WILL move quicker, be more prepared, respond with more certainty - because of having had this prior "touch". We can never be left with regret when our hearts have been so profoundly stirred by an encounter - even if it went "unfulfilled". There WILL be a next time which you are alive and alert to... perhaps God will even grant a second "meeting" with this same girl. Your gifts to her are priceless. This is one beautiful story - and one which has yet to be concluded, I feel. Keep me posted! LOL Kate xx

A truly heartfelt write, Dawn; and believe it or not, just acknowledging and desiring to help those like her makes a huge huge difference in our far too often callous world. Truly wish more felt the same.

Dawn, this is exceptional! It hit me so close to home because this is what my husband and I feel we were put here for. Our ministry is to reach out to the poor. My heart ached and I wanted to find her with you.

This is a poem that touches the heart and soul of all who will read it. Even if you never find her again to give her your gifts, she has certainly given you one. Insight is a gift beyond what money can ever buy.
Take care,
Sherry

This is such a well-written, sad...yet hopeful poem. Why hopeful? Because there are people, like you, who do care for those less fortunate, who feel true sorrow at the hand that was delt them, who are willing to open hearts, and prayers, in a season that demands it, to give pause. Beautiful. Beautiful.

Dawn, this is probably the most profound write I've ever read in my entire life. If one can read this and not feel it, they better check their pulse.
Awesome.
