Perhaps I thought
you’d appreciate my respect
and concern for ill effect,
willingness to review, inspect
motive, affect.

Perhaps you thought
I’d boil a rabbit in a pot,
demand your love, ready or not,
invent an elaborate plot,
aim, take a shot.

Perhaps I felt
it my responsibility
to protect my serenity,
to encourage tranquility,
stability.

Perhaps you felt
compromised by civility,
threatened by love’s reality,
bound by what you’d call loyalty,
integrity.

Perhaps I know
it doesn’t matter who thought what
when, where, why or how,
so long as we trust, hope, endow
faith, hope – somehow.

Perhaps you know
we can rise above this river,
wild winds that whip, make us shiver.
If we can accept heart’s quiver,
perhaps then peace.
