Red Planet Rising

Stifling August skies, quiet
after fury of summer storm.
Shocked again by this darkness
gathering, emotions fold like
flowers bidding day adieu.

New moon hides in night’s blanket.
Blood red planet rising seizes
a spot not held for sixty
thousand years. Stunned by rapidly
unraveling mystery,

I feel spark of anger race
like fire through forest heart, shake
my fist at oppressive dark
and demand light from one who rules
sun, stars, missing moon and Mars

but leaves me tonight in strange
circumstance, alone. Hot warrior
hate courses through pulsing veins
and I know I would travel, too,
sixty thousand light years more

if I thought I could belong,
nudge myself closer to neighbor
who thinks me untouchable,
sees me as unthinkable as
laughing little green man.

He might be up there, you know,
longing for home, looking for some
answer down here. But tonight
all he sees is my discontent,
peculiar anger ill-spent.
