Although I thumbed a bit and discovered the turned up noses of "important" people that gave me a ride and the cold and sun and wind that can take the life out of you while waiting for that ride, I often was the one picking the hitchhiker in my hundred dollar ride and taking them somewhere.
Big Sur has the blues. A 30 mile portion is now closed because of landslides and need to rebuild the road on both ends, making California 1 impassable and stranding those living in having businesses in that stretch. They have to hike out to get essentials. One end of the rebuilding will be done by fall.
Richie Havens first got my attention when I saw a film of Woodstock where the camera was right up in his toothless (?) face while he sang "Here comes the sun" and "Freedom," with such conviction that I immediately became a fan.
