I wrote this poem for the children of the school at which I used to teach,
( a so-called 'normal' school ).
These children frequently teased the children of a nearby school for the physically and mentally challenged.
I see so many disabled children out there, Children needing so much love and care. Yet, so many of you treat them with scorn or fear, And this goes on year after year.
These children need love and understanding each day, So when you see them, don't turn away! Instead, offer a helping hand along the way, Think of how fortunate you are to be able to play.
Some of these children find it difficult to bend, But their love and compassion have no end. With the rest of the world, they simply want to blend, So the next time you see them, try being a friend.
This was outstanding, beautifully written and much needed! I loved this, and could not agree with you more,

This is a excellant poem to be used as a teaching tool for tolerance and understanding. You show such genuine emotion and understanding, if only everyone did!!!!
Before I went into nursing I worked 13 years for the state of Pennsylvania and the county here where I live in working with individuals who were MH/MR inflicted, and the way they get treated by most of the public...ie stares, snickers, pointing and the like is horrific and heartwrenching! The sad thing is it is not only children but also adults too, and to compound upon that sadness it is being done by the offspring as well as the ones themselves who said back in the sixties, "No more institutions of filth, no more human warehouses! Let them become integral functioning to the best of their abilities parts of society!" A good display/show that it is not only the politicians who go back on their words and feelings!

As a handicapped person, I couldn't agree more! I was teased because of my disabilities; and years later, the pain is still there. Teasing DOES hurt, even after years go by! Teasing DOES effect people!
