I. Verses: Lyrics written 4/25/2005, 3 days after my mother’s death to a song melody that I’ve had around at the piano since 1997!
1.
I was standing in the Dooryard,
where long ago they stood;
Looking for a Place to call a home -
And there beside a LILAC bush,
Was a secret Will & Testament
Of initials carved deep in Love alone.

And there beneath / the Old Apple Tree,
Are inscribed two names in cold, hard stone;
[Their ashes mingled with the earthy loam]
Their SOULS aren’t there but
walk upon the “Farther Shore,”
Holding hands and hearts as before,
With initials carved deep in those hearts alone.
Chorus: (in “high voice” with piano)
And there along the old country track;
[If I could stop the Hands of Time, I would turn them back] ./. repeat from here after sung once
I see them walking as each summer before,
Then there was a flash (of Light), along that “Farther Shore”
Did my mother turn and wave to me?
Or was it just the wind blowing through the old Apple Tree?
3. (1a.) I was standing in the orchard,
where long ago they stood;
Looking for a place to call my own,
And as we stood beneath the Apple Tree,
They wrote a secret Will & Testament,
Of Initials Carved Deep in Love alone.
