New Year's eve: speaking of babies, the old man '08 going out and new baby '09 coming in!
Another one from my unpublished 1980's book: Childhoood to Childhood. Yet, thanks to being on AD, I edited it quite a bit, and I do think it's better. Particularly with the shifting POV.
In any case, if I ever find the time I am going to publish the poems I saved from this era to Lulu. It's just find time with all the music work I've been doing
Have a Safe & happy New Year's Eve.
A billion births and deaths have I
And still the joy I AM can never die
A million tears these eyes cried for you
In every baby's eyes I've seen brand new
In every mother's arm I reach to hold,
The endless stories of the generations unfold.
A heart that was heavy with time's unraveling
tossed like a ship of love on an endless sea of life traveling
Now this baby's arms reached to grasp his mother,
And cried & cried until she had become another.
Through it all, though her face had changed
He finally awoke to find his life was rearranged
Secure and sure in her love, a never questioned world
Day after day, somehow that world whirled and unfurled
to reveal that childhood had all been written
And his heart with sorrow and longing had been smitten.
Though through the years her smile never faded
I searched her eyes for our dream that waited
Behind the aging of our mothers' youth,
We almost lose courage to face the truth:
with time will always come a childhood's end.
We search life for the messages memories send
"All things must pass" is all I can could fathom here,
Though joy & beauty were both mine, it was then over-shadowed by fear
Closing behind the silent doors of time, separation in death lay,
And like a feeble candle in the night, my hopes did wait for the day
When I'd found our dream that waited,
A life's eternal dreams fulfilled not faded.
A Child is the joy of God's creation,
To see this mother's love was to know love's elation
At a bond so sweet that never should be broken,
Made of wordless joy that can never be spoken.
In time and life all things must grow
And we are all surely replaced in this show
By others forever coming; ours an endless journey
In search of love and a child's eternity.
I've come to see from the eye of the Beholder
That to only live from this one body
Is to become older and older
I give it all back to the Power in All beings
To flow in every heart is the home for my feelings
A billion tears and joys have I
in every generation I'm born and die
In a million mother's arms I come and go
And though I ever change, I ever grow
to know a love that forever lasts
and will always be and never pass.
The pictures of this child's sweetest smile
Will ever reveal this God of Generations -
that comes and goes;
and but stays awhile.

I love your wording...especially the opening lines of the first and last stanzas. It all comes out like a meaningful sigh--not pedantic, and yet full of warm messages. The greatest legacy we recieve, I believe, is a loving set of ancestors. --Charlie
