Where Have All The Poets Gone?

Received an interesting broadcast from an Author’s Den poetess sharing what had been penned [to her] by another individual touting the appropriate place for freedom of poetic expression.  Here it is [in part]
“ … I, in no way, am against humor, melancholy, euphoria or any other genuine emotion which poetry emotes. You are more than entitled to have fun with your friends, but why don't you, or them, create a MySpace.com site and IM or blog all you wish.  I was directed to AD by literary friends who indicated the site had a lot of interesting works - and it does. What you may not realize is that the site is sometimes "scouted" and I don't believe they are impressed by works akin to something we might have done in high school study hall.   …”

Where Have All The Poets Gone?
By Kathy Armijo

Where have all the poets gone?
To cyberspace, of course.
No more mind stimulation
Only denigration.

Poets have a brain.
They are able to sustain
Thoughts of peace and tranquility
And, lo, even frivolity.

To each who writes with humor,
Melancholy, euphoria or emotion
The thought of cyberspace
Is taking away poetry’s face.

Our family at the Den
Is filled with compassion,
Love and tenderness
And golly, gee, even silliness.

It seems that whoever wrote
This comment to an AD poetess
Is a critic who lives in a castle with a moat
And lives a life filled with sadness.

I, for one,
Will continue to join in the fun
It expands my mind
And is not unkind.

So, to this unkind soul
You are hereby banished to cyberspace
There to meet your fate
Having to watch us have fun through a tiny keyhole.

Kudos to you Kathy, there are those who only live in the dead poetry society and can not accept new works as valid poetry. They are not lovers of poetry only followers of the past, great poets of yore are reveered and today's poets are deemed unworthy. To all poets in the living poets society, I say continue writing and strive for your own personal level of greatness, I don't believe that all past great poets were received with great fanfare in their time either. Just keep those pens flowing because we write from the depths of our bared souls. To me that is what poetry is all about.

Good on you Kathy - this is a growing, living community - not a high school.

Much love to you all.

Good for you Kathy!

Every garden, no matter how prolific or simple, will have its bugs and root rot, and those occasional stones that dislodge from somewhere, and roll down through and damage whatever is in their path.

AD is assuredly a community of friends, encouragers, and also a few who are seriously striving to make a mark (so to speak) in the literary world. Authors Den is also inudated with wannabes and simpletons which could be looked upon, or construed, as those that never made it past the fifth grade in their creative abilities.

But why?

Even the simplest and most inane writers have something to say, and anyone can glean something from them if they can get past those forces that cause some to condescend from their towers of sand.

Ha. I liked this. Sometimes I'm down and cannot encourage anyone, but it's always temporal. Next day I'm happy and eating something favorite of mine and waiting for a word or two from those close to me. That's when I can pass it, a good feeling/mood on. Cheers

Thank God for places such as the den
to post our work and perhaps have it
read. I feel that not everything is
meant to be a masterpiece, so here's
to you Kathy for bringing this to light.
Brava!

Dear Kathy,

I believe that the internet has been a huge boost for the art of poetry, taking it to a level never before reached. I'm glad to be a part of this history-making phenomena.

Way to go! There's always a killjoy in every crowd. It's their choice as to who and what to read, and yet the need in some, to put down, to lift themselves up, is too irresistable; hence, we see this type of bias, and snobby behavior. Keep om keepin on Rock

I've been on AD since 2003, and we periodically get these very somber critics. But actually, I find this one quite humorous. This person seems quite concerned about these 'scouts,' yet he or she hasn't posted one poem, story, or article on AD. I wonder if they hope to get discovered by 'The Silly Comment' Scouts. I hear they offer the best packages and writing contracts!

A wonderful rebuttal. It seems there are always those in the world that wants everyone else to change to fit in the mold of what they desire. Is creativity meant only for the GREATS?

Thank you Kathy for an expressive write. I enjoy, let me correct that, I look forward to whatever time I have during the day to come here to the den. I have met so many wonderful people and have learned so much since coming here. It is a sort of family here. I read what others write and some read me, sort of like a support unit. It has been and still is wonderful here and I plan on staying for a long time to come. Again thanks and may God bless you.....

Be safe,
Karen

Y'know its funny but the kids who screwed around passing writes in the study hall are pretty much the only ones who went on to write professionally. F*&% him/her !! when artists lower their walls, loosen up and collaborate, it's a wonderful thing. Its tantamount to a group of musicians who pick up their instruments and go with a jam. For an artistic site there sure are alot of tight-asses here. As one who does "scout" here I wouldn't give them the time of day. It's one thing to perform a task but quite another to enjoy it and to entertain an audience. My advice to him/her is to remove the head from thine ass and when they're less constipated give some thought to why they and their "literary friends" aren't that good to begin with, have no exposure, have never sold jack-shit, and should focus more on their day-jobs. When what you do isn't fun anymore, give it up, 'cause at that point your audience will have lost its passion for your work as well. Revel on !!! :)

Long time passing, when will they ever learn, when, will, they ever learn......
Well it wouldnt of been right to not respond with those lines, after all, poetry is music, music is poetry in the absence of a melody or music arrangement, but then again, lots of us write with a tune in our heads LOL...so WHERE"S the scouts I wonder, anyone heard from any of these BRILLIANT people who CAN PICK A TALENT....

Hmmm, yeah didnt think so!!!
I'd say it was a cyborg that wrote that critisism, coz cyborgs can't write poetry, they only understand DATA, how boring, hoo hum..

Brilliant work here, way to go, sock it to the cyborgs hahaha.

Well, I am totally insulted! Is this person a poet also? Perhaps she comes from thoughts of I wish I could write, and can't so then bashes sensitive and caring people, who happens to be very talented and are way more in tune with the "real" world than this person will ever be. Thank you for bringing this to our attention..As far as the scouts are concerned, well they can take us or leave us!

I agree and bow my head to you dear heart...who is he to judge what is acceptable as good poetry or bad poetry, if I recall even limerics are a vital part of most English college curriculum. I suppose said scholar would have also after reading the lines:
"I think that I shall never see..." would have put down the author as being without vision and sophormoric. Let freedom of speech ring forth in the den and if censurship by the den is inposed as he also suggested...then my dues will not be renewed again...

Excellent, Kathy:

We've become a family here. There are excellent poets, bad poets, so-so poets. We (hopefully) encourage, support, and definately write. Why? Because we have to. None of us (or very few, anyway, ever get rich writing poetry. I do it because I have to. Poetry saved my life...an excellent write. Enjoyed.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
