Mountain High
By Kathy Armijo

What do you write about
when the head is empty?
Is this what is called burn-out?
Or, simply a word drought?

Perhaps, it is the autumn.
I’d rather be outdoors than in,
basking in the cool delight,
and taking in the wondrous sight.

So, here I sit reminiscing about this past weekend
in the Colorado mountains, taking in autumn.
As the road snaked through the mountains
the view, a demonstration of majestic profusion.

Each curve was a new vision:
the waterfalls, the rainbows,
the pine trees, the aspens,
and the scent of the mountains, everywhere.

The gray clouds hung low on the
snow-capped mountain tops,
reminding us that winter
is almost here.

The mountainside – so delicate,
the colors of an Indian blanket,
reds, oranges, yellows and greens.
The likes of which I’ve never seen.

The flowers were few,
but filled in the view
with whites and pinks.
There was even a butterfly or two.

The hours flew by like minutes.
The camera shutter was busy clicking,
as we drove from spot to spot,
enjoying the bliss we’d sought.

The air was crisp and cool,
the streams were running too.
We even saw some deer
meandering through the town.

This day had no flaw.
We went to the spa,
surrendered to a wonderful massage,
and spent time in the steaming vapor caves.

Mind and body invigorated,
we had an early dinner.
Now completely sated,
we sat back and contemplated tomorrow.

Where shall we go?
What shall we see?
God’s beauty is magnificent!
Everywhere we look,

we view His awesome handiwork.

But for now,
we’ll enjoy the night we’d anticipated.

Me, too, and it sounds like you had quite a lovely weekend. The Rockies are always wondrous, and especially so in the fall.

Kathy,

The beauty of thought fills your pen my friend. It's as easy as blinking your eyes. May you always find peace and happiness as you have just shared with us. Always, Paul.

Kathy,

I love poems about nature. I guess it is American Indian in me. I especially appreciate this part of your verse in 'Mountain High'. I too get a lot of inspiration from nature, especially in the mountains of North Carolina. We are well into the beauty of fall, which reminds me of my youth spent in Vermont. I forget, where did you say that you are from?

Excellent write Kathy
when you think your thoughts are dry
they are not
just a take a few moments to observe
what's around you, it's all inspirational
or better yet write about your block and why
by the way great imagery
Peace & love be with you

Welcome back! It is a beautiful place and you poem's reflection does it justice. It is a beautiful state for enjoying the outdoors and God's magic paintbrush. Your pen is often close to God's paint brush.

One cannot describe any better what a trip on a mountain can contain with beauty that is woven by God's own hands and a scent that can hypnotize a poor city bound lad. How I wish I was back on a mountain again.

I've been so busy right now and my writing has suffered. Maybe I need to sit and look at a mountain. Problem is --- the mountains are a long way off. Thanks for bringing them to me.
