*Terminator Seeds - link at the bottom explains the controversy

on a wood porch I sip from a goblet
as a jasmine vine climbs
the trellis near my elbow
pink begonias fountain the hanging baskets
you can smell the pacific
as it rolls over the banister

I thought of the acres
we’d traveled
farmlands rich with crops
illusions of nurturing abundance
I wondered if mankind had a conscious
when they created terminator seeds
and why it was so necessary
beyond the obvious greed
to alter the DNA of something
so precious as a seed,
natures perfect design
assuring abundance and food
for ever after
generations of crops
that now were mutated
to one harvest
I wondered what eating that crop would
do – mutate the population?
maybe we’d also no longer be reproductive
its overwhelming, sometimes

I hated an invisible unknowable enemy
my only strategy
was to avoid the commercial grocer
and support the organic farmers
sigh, pour a glass of mental whine
and find contentment
here on the porch
near the jasmine vine

Beautiful and powerful imagery here my friend, your write is powerful and your heartfelt emotions come through loud and clear within your words. I too think that what nature produces is for a reason, why change it. Sometimes I think that the modern methods of experimentation are just too much! Enjoyed this heartfelt write my friend!
Blessings.

Very sadly, corporate greed seems to truly be unstoppable these days, we see it in everything from the gas pump to the grocery store to the callous butchering of numerous life forms.

And I think it will one day be the death of us all - and our home world.

We have a million cows, pruducing a million gallons of milk, how come they can sell seven million gallons of milk?
Milk? is that a kind of white stuff?
I think I will suck jasmins.

Excellent poem and info that makes us wonder how we are still alive in this crazy environment where everything seems bent on killing us!
Thanks Debby!;-)

It is both frigtening and worrisome for us to contemplate what our grand children and grand children may be affected by mad scientist types of genitic development in crops and cattle...

Debby,
I have often wondered about foodstuffs with altered genetics....sad thing is we may not know till it's to late...
Insightful, and food, (pardon the pun) for thought.....
