An elders lament.

© 2008 M. Bennett Hooper

Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith two Blues singers of bygone days sang and wrote..”Don’t like my ocean, don’t fish in my sea. “ “Stay out of my valley and let my mountains be.”
They were singing about romance how timely if we in our time send out these lyrics to would be politicians who are managed by the corporatacracies of the world.

My ocean is America where the economies of scale find the middle working class are no longer needed as they are left behind sacrificed upon an altar of greed where corporate executives make millions as the government bails out their faltering companies, and reward others increasing profits in the military industrial complex as we are told private armies are fighting for peace.

Stuck on stupid is a now popular song played by many who think they are powerless when faced with diminishing opportunities for their children and grandchildren who have been sold into the new world slavery markets of service only occupations and urban school systems continue to release hostages upon a slumbering populace who wonder about the choices of thug life by the young who have watched the real thugs daily don the uniforms of white collar graying society.

Surprised are many who discovered that they too are expendable and cannot afford to sit idly by doing nothing.
Kola Boof speaks of the “Impotence of integrity” which is a daily meal for too many who are allowed the illusion of leadership and instead secure their comfort zones by purchasing things they cannot afford to impress others who could care less if they live or die.

What so proudly we hail is not enough if we continue to encourage gladiators to kill each other for prizes they will never win and we the elderly sit wondering what could we have done differently as we refuse to believe that we too are powerless.
Longer life expectancy is a mirage when health care is unaffordable.
Who are the vultures, who is the meal.
Ain’t no telling.

I so agree with what you said in so much of this. It is a pity that in this day and age that people put things before people- they spend, spend, spend, on clothes with labels and expensive things they can't afford and put on credit cards, then complain about the economy and their lack of money-they throw money at problems, have children that are like accessories who they want to make sure get everything they want, when what they really want and need is their parents time, but oh no, the parents both have to work like slaves to pay for the things the children need, round and round they go, chasing their tails, all for an ugly pocketbook with some rich fat cats designer logo on it while someone somewhere is going to the food pantry for their next meal- I know, I have been and still am, one of those people, disabled and wondering why people think objects mean more than people and the spirit. In the words of George Michael, "He must've let us all out to play, turned His back, and all God's children, crept out the back door." Bless you for writing this-oh, and for mentioning Bessie, not enough people know about her these days :) Michelle xxx

Hey girl! think how lucky we are getting old and don't caring if anybody listening when we enjoy Tennessee Ernie Ford belting "The Shot-Gun Boogie", "Mule Train" or "Ain't Nobody Business but my Own"

Hitting upon the core values that are being sacrificed at the alter of greed, how absolutely fitting...
