Poem from Bittersweet: The Diary of Brandy Morgan by Leslie Lee Sanders

Poem Artwork

I will never get over the many stares I get. It bothers me every time to see the young, white faces stare at my dark colored one. It’s not as though I am malformed or disfigured; Although, some people think I am.

The older men and woman keep their children away from me and clinch their pocket books when I walk by. They look at me as though I am a criminal that has been set free to criminalize again.

But what have I done? Why do they give me such stares?

Is it only because I am black? A young, black female that attends the same school their children attend, walks the same streets their children walk, and have the ability to turn their children into full-blown criminals if my skin comes in contact with theirs?

So, I am a criminal. The many times I attempt to shake hands with strangers I am only trying to destroy their lives. Only trying to turn them into the useless, worthless being that I am. Such evilness, being me.

Well, crimes as those should be punishable by means of stares, racial slurs, rudeness, and an ever present reminder to stick with my own kind.

This is lovely. I grew up in Georgia. Touching black skin, especially if the person didn't "work" for your family or relatives, was a death sentence almost!! Incurable things would come to pass. Cheers
