Unplugged

I called, just to hear your voice,
in reality, the last thing
I wanted to hear,
which might explain why,
I used an iffy cell phone,
speeding in my car,
with Alanis and something
old-but-newly “unplugged”
busting the car speakers out,
precursed by the afternoon dj,
 announcing happy anniversary
and the re-release of
A Jagged Little Pill.

I swallowed hard,
making it somehow easier
to hear what I didn’t recognize,
which was your voice,
with all due respect,
where previously
there had been none,
and you didn’t sound like you,
because I never knew you,
not the me that knows me now,
and while Alanis ranted, “unplugged”
and all “head over feet,” I somehow
won me back, in spite of you.
