You make me recall the time I had a spinal workup at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. I drove over 100 miles or so from Wisconsin in bitter cold below zero. When I neared Rochester I saw Canada geese flying in those conditions and wondered why they were there?
I have since learned, that the good farmers of Rochester saved Canada geese from extinction from over hunting around 1920 when they fed them through the winter corn, their favorite food. Canada geese and other geese are now quite plentiful throughout the North American continent, thanks to better hunting practices and the good people of Rochester who continue to feed the geese through the worst of winter, keeping them there, rather than flying further south. Fat and tight feathers keep the geese warm in the worst of Arctic conditions.
