a short fiction story in poetic form

Chapter Three

1:00 am

a train flies by
just outside our window
i watch the lights roll
across the white landscape
the bulky mass of darkness
fading into darkness
the air forgetting
the train had ever disturbed it
and you continue to sleep
and i continue to hope
that you will wake

you met me outside my school
wearing your dirtiest jeans
and a sweatshirt
proclaiming the name of your school
i felt too dressed up
in my private school plaid
you hugged me
told me it made me seem innocent
while i was anything but
i wondered what you meant by that
but was happy you were there
you walked me to work
and on my days off
we would walk to your house
lie in your backyard
and watch the sky
sometimes cloudless
sometimes not
we would sit out there in the rain
in the shine
no matter what
we talked, we acted silly
we were young
and that’s all it was about

you introduced me to
your public school friends
you and i
we were always together
always somewhere
with your friends
at the record shop
at your aunt’s or my parents’ homes
and while we were together
we were rarely alone
and you kept it like that for two months
always with others around
i wondered why
until i realized
you were afraid to kiss me
he told me
a friend of yours
it was ok
i was afraid to be kissed
afraid of how it would feel
would it bring back memories?
or would it be like bliss?

i kiss you now
my lips brush your cheek
your fingers in mine
clench
for just a moment
and relax again
you go on sleeping
undisturbed
