As a former hunter who was avid about it for four years but only owned two guns, a bolt action 16gauge shotgun and a 22 semi automatic, I abhor the fear engendered by the NRA, forcing people to buy firearms for "personal protection." It is a misguided use of the 2nd amendment to make sure that the major firearms producers can profit from the second amendment self protection hysteria.
I was 16 before my parents bought me the guns. I immediately took NRA gun safety training, bought hunting licenses and strictly adhered to hunting seasons and law, unlike some of my contemporaries in high school. During the brief four-year period that my brother and I hunted together, we had three accidents that could have been deadly or wounded us gravely. There are no good national statistics on the number of gunshot accidents because many of them are taken care of by emergency rooms and are never reported. I know of several friends who have lost their children with pistols in their house for protection.
Assault weapons were created as weapons of war. The entertainment industry, television and movies, along with video games and even virtual reality, all portray assault weapons as the preferred type of gun to carry for either self-defense or wanton destruction. These media show many nameless bad guys, and sometimes, good guys being mowed down as a matter of fact way of doing business or life for that matter. When something like Las Vegas occurs, we see the reality of automatic weapons is nothing like the fantasy so often portrayed.
Not only were 58 killed and 525 suffered reminders for the rest of their lives, perhaps 25,000 people will have PTSD as they relive the horror they experienced for years after.
The automatic weapon this moron used to kill was already illegal. Still, no one should be allowed to buy such an arsenal of weapons. That would be a "Red flag" if it were illegal to have more than one and if there was a limit on the amount ammo. one person could purchase. Still, what was in this guys head? Did he think this was as surreal as a video game? Something is not right in Denver! The truth is I can recall a time as a young kid when you could leave your car door unlocked and keep your front door to your house open all day. What happened? The moral fiber was gutted out of our country and respect for law and order went south. No ten commandments, no Bible in schools and no talking about God. So what do we replace the goodness that God represents? Evil. It's that simple. People walking around without a conscience and no respect for life or the law are running loose in society because we were too stupid to know that it was better the way of the light. So we cut out the light and we wonder why are now living in a world full of darkness. Pray that God will forgive us!
