Going for the Gold

by Betty Jo Tucker — Read all 96 poems by Betty Jo Tucker

Congratulations to all the Oscar nominees announced this morning! Although, as usual, some worthy candidates failed to make the list, the Best Picture race looks very interesting. In fact, it motivated me to write the poem below.

Poem Artwork

Going for the Gold

Roma and The Favourite clash

for Oscar gold and future cash.

Which one will win the statuette?

We are not sure, at least not yet.

Other movies could win the prize.

Like Black Panther or even Vice.

Bohemian Rhapsody might

put up a most terrific fight.

But A Star Is Born and Green Book

should not be films to overlook.

And BlackKkKlansman might be the one

to win Best Film when all is done.

You are right about that! It's a horse race for sure! I have two poems by that title, when I believe about going for one's goal in life, and the other about seeking gold in the Olympics. What is interesting is that I have so many reads for those poems. It's like writing any book about making money and people will flock to it. Why are we so enamored with riches?

But I got off your subject. One thing is certain though, once someone in filmdom wins an Oscar, if they don't mess it up, money will flow their way.

The reason I like the Oscars is that they tend to find the best movies. The one I will watch later rather than the garbage watching I tended to do when I was a student paying little or nothing for going to the movies. Now I get my money's worth by watching what others think is good.

Good luck to all, but overall, I could care less about the Oscars.
