From a Poe, point of view?

Tightly clenched in one hand is his scythe

The arc, symbolic of the finality of its cut

The reins of his fiery steed wrapped taut

About the bony white digits of his other hand

Fate is being exhaled in tremendous vortexes

From the nostrils of his mount

Darker than a black hole is the steed

At speed that bends and distorts light

The duo traverse and instantly span any distance

Within the universe immense

From the fringes of creation their journey began

That nebulous region north, south, east and west of infinity

Flashes of pulsating light pierce the darkness

Gaseous matter crackles and hisses providing a faint glimpse

A shadowy outline of the rider, the steed and their path

The rider is all bone--fleshless

He is hooded in mystery and cloaked with the unknown

No distinct figure emerges

Two fiery expressionless embers, glare from within the hood

Fixed with singleness of purpose

From where once surely the eyes of a mortal

Must have resided

His foray ordered by the ultimate authority

Its purpose most clearly defined, the time exact and deadly precise

All manner of stealth does he employ

Every device solely at his discretion

For detection is an option not granted unto him

The intended victim known only to the creator

And this special envoy from out of the where and why

Never is his intended victim

Before hand known

None shall elude or evade the rider and his steed

When their intent, is to terminate

No one can, their journey impede

Relentless is the pursuit

There is no defense for his onslaught

Swiftly and precisely the task is executed

Each ride by the duo sealing the fate of the intended

Without debate

No one is ever--late

Ooooohhh, Jon Willey! I had to check my cozy space to see if there was an intruder! Finally realized thundering beat was that of my heart...I am a big fan of Poe, and you have picked his bones...errr...words delightfully well.

**********Add my second to chilling and captivating, then tack on fascinating. MOVES !! **********

Here comes Picky Petunia. The comma between light & pierce isn't needed, and it causes a pause that interrupts the flow that you
engineered to perfection. (See also "...intent,is to..."} Plus
I believe you meant to write "taut," rather than "taught."

Now go back and read the first sentence. It is way-out more important
than Petunia's pickin'. Love your work, Jon Willey!!

Hi Jon, you do have your own brand of 'grimness' maybe a bit inspired by great poets, but I assure you, this one has all the JM touch and I enjoyed it. Chilling and captivating. Thank you for sharing this 'Poe point of view'. Love it! :)

A more thorough description of the reaper has never been written. You have taught me much with your taut phrases.

Jon,
Although great, I don't think this creation rings of Poe. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have lived back in his time, so we could have our own styles immortalized? lol. I sense the same ring of respect for the reaper in your poem that I used in my Death poems. Especially in your poem, there is a fantastic feeling of superhero. Reminds me of that rider movie with Nick Cage. Poe mostly used death and darkness as an accent, a threat maybe, even a mood. He seemed to show more reverance for his characters than he did for death. It seemed like an obvious outcome to him. Just my take. I'm a fan of his, but I haven't read all. Just the same, the imagery in this poem pops and I have an eerie feeling of being unable to escape this ghastly character. I'm glad you mentioned it to me. Enjoyed!

Wow! Your decriptive powers are superb in this poem Jon! The images clear and dynamic. reminds me of dirty Harry on horseback with his deep convictions of always getting who he goes after and being so secretive about it;-) Clint reminds me of the grim reaper;-)
Fantastic story/poem!

Even in knowing that this poem was about the Grim Reaper, the last two lines were c h i l l i n g! You had me anxious to read the next line and never was I disappointed. I'm not a big fan of Poe, but this one was like watching his path unfold.

God bless you. Kathy

Darkly vivid images do indeed give a "Poe-like" style to your verses, Willie. By (it's = it is), I believe that you mean to write (its = the possessive article). I also appreciate when others point out my typos so that I may correct them. Thank you for sharing this symbolic write. Love and peace to you,

Regis
