Mining Men

Early miners led a dismal existence.

Purple sage

dancing

in a hot

dusty breeze

noon high

blast furnace sun

red rocks

ancient lava bloom

flowering cacti towering

above the cracked

dry mesa floor

no rain clouds

silt,the river's flow

weary feet won't meet

cool water

parched lips

cracked skin

desert dweller's sin

hide their hooch

in root cellars

hot booze

don't quench

a mining man's

powerful thirst

gold in my pouch

joy in my cup

I'll use 'em both up

You have effectively conveyed the ambiance that you intended, Jon. I guess gold can make some people do anything. Thank you. Love and peace,

Shades of the old West. Enjoyed.

My younger brother prospects those parts for more than gold, ancient Indian artifacts.

You breath such life into the way it was for so many too soon forgotten. A difficult and treacherous life to say the least for such little pay....

Be always safe,

Jon, I loved the earthy feeling of this writing, my father was a coal miner, never did he search for gold, but I know what a life he lived working underground day after day. Sad, go to work when it was dark and return at dark - one big circle. I loved, "Joy in my cup, I'll use,em both up. His was sneaking a cigarette when he could - "Outside" the mine. I truly enjoyed this.

I like this poem, Jon, and the way you make it move through
the heat and weary life of the mining man whose only joy is
in a cup. Excellent. -gene.

”gold in my pouch joy in my cup I'll use 'em both up ”...this is a great line Jon, it captures the spirit of this life style...I especially like the use of the phrase “joy in my cup” and the prophecy “I'll use 'em both up” . The pairing of these two makes for one very powerful statement...again Jon great write

Jon,

No matter where you mine, it's hard, dangerous work - I am the grand-daughter of a coal miner (my mother's dad). Excellently conveyed in these lines, well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
