We sat 'neath the tree of long branches
harvesting the last rays of comfort
from a sun falling into the horizon's grip
its retreat into night's mysterious flight
leaves us less bold
bravado quickly takes leave
searching the margin's deep recesses
we blink, nod and accumulate winks
stories and mysteries hidden within
revealed in performances and replays
the screen, behind our lids
draws our reviews of fear, love and delight
depending upon the night
captive to every episode
no preview, some old
some recurring friends
some frightful reminders
as they stir us through the night
our pestilence revealed
penance determined
must be executed
for in dark night's silence
we'll find no void where relief
may seek punishment's avoidance
brave men shall you seek
forgiveness in the new light
or languish with your fears
in the bed of long night
